- We believe in One God (Deuteronomy 6:4), who exists in three distinct but co-equal, co-eternal persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Peter 1:2). God is wise, and good, and reigns over all that He has made.
- We believe God has revealed Himself in many ways: 1) He has revealed Himself (His divine nature and power) generally by the things He has made (Romans 1:19-20). 2) He has revealed Himself specially by giving to Humanity His Word recorded in the sacred Scripture, the Holy Bible – both Old and New Testaments (2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:1). 3) He has revealed Himself personally by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, taking upon Himself human flesh to reveal God’s character and fulfill His divine, saving purposes (John 14:9; Hebrews 1:2).
- We believe Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man (John 1:1, 14; Philippians 2:6-8). The second person of the Trinity added a second nature to Himself in order to 1) dwell among us (John 1:14), 2) teach us the truth and the right ways to live (John 14:15), and 3) be the perfect substitutionary sacrifice for our sins (Romans 3:25; Hebrews 2:17). He died on a cross, was buried in a tomb, and on the third day was raised and then ascended to the right hand of God, the Father (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). We believe that all things were created by Him and for Him and that he upholds all things by the word of His power (Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:3).
- We believe the Holy Spirit is active in convicting the world of sin and judgment (John 16:8), guiding believers into truth (John 16:13), helping believers to understand the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 2:14-15), and He also bears witness within ourselves that we are children of God (Romans 8:16). The Holy Spirit is active in salvation, regenerating sinners by grace, and baptizing them into the church. The Holy Spirit dwells inside the believer, helping them to keep God’s commands (John 14:15-17). The Holy Spirit gifts the saved with abilities for service (Romans 12:3-8). He also works within the believer to produce the various fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) for godly living.
- We believe God created “the heavens and the earth” (that is: all things that exist) by nothing more than His sovereign and powerful decree (Genesis 1:1-2:3). Upon completion, He pronounced His creation “very good.” However, all creation has since been subjected to frustration under the curse because of Adam’s sin and is not currently as it ought to be (Genesis 3:17-19; Romans 8:20-22). The whole creation awaits complete restitution and renewal and will be the “new heavens and new earth.”
- We believe God created Humanity in a state of goodness and for stewarding the whole creation toward God’s wise purposes (Genesis 1:26-29, 31). Yet, our first parents (Adam and Eve acting as representatives for the rest of humanity to come after them) chose to sin and rebel against God’s commands (Genesis 3:17). Thereby, all humanity was corrupted and possesses a fallen sinful nature and must be saved from God’s wrath if they are to dwell forever with God (Ephesians 2:1-3).
- We believe Salvation is the good and most perfect gift of God’s grace to sinful humanity, to be received only by faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:11-12; Acts 16:31). Salvation cannot be merited or earned in any way by works, but it will result in changed lives and performing good works which God prepared before the foundation of the world for His people to do (Ephesians 2:8-10).
- We believe the Church is comprised of all those saved by God’s grace through faith in the past, present, and future (Hebrews 12:1). The purpose of the church is to glorify God through worship (Exodus 4:23, 31), instruction in His word (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and through serving Him as he has appointed (Ephesians 4:11-12). God has gifted the church with spiritual gifts (Holy Spirit-granted and empowered abilities) to function as God intended. God has given two ordinances for the church to practice: Baptism (Matthew 28:19) and the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
- We believe that the Lord will return (John 14:3; Acts 1:11) as He promised to judge the living and the dead (1 Peter 4:5): to raise the saved in Christ to everlasting life and glory, and to consign the unsaved to everlasting punishment, away from the blessing of God (Revelation 20:11-15). We believe the saved will inherit resurrected bodies like Christ’s with eternal glory in the new heavens and new earth (Philippians 3:21; Revelation 21:1) and the unsaved will be subjected to eternal misery (Revelation 21:8). We recognize there is a variety of interpretations of matters related to the “Last Things” within Historic Orthodox Christianity. However, instead of selecting one particular stream of thinking, we seek to regard all with grace and charity while fostering study on these matters until the Lord returns and makes His plans manifest.
- We believe that God has created each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Genesis 1:26-27)
- We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Genesis 2:18-25)
- We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other. (1 Corinthians 6:18; 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4)
- We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, homosexual behavior, fornication, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest and use of pornography) as described in the Scripture is sinful and offensive to God. (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
- In order to preserve the function and integrity of our Church Body and to provide a Biblical role model to the Church’s members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by the Church or serving in any capacity as a volunteer, officer or member agree to abide by this Statement on Marriage, Gender and Sexuality. (Matthew 5:16; Philippians 2:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:22) It is also to be made known to anyone using the grounds or church property that any immoral behavior as defined above will not be permitted.
- We further believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking his mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. (Acts 3:19-21; Romans 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
- We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect and dignity. (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31) Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of Mohawk Community Church.
